Japan is a formal society with complex etiquette and precise manners. Fortunately, you’ll generally be fine just behaving in the same thoughtful and polite manner you’d use in your home country. So, the first rule is: RELAX!

However, you might want to know some simple rules, habits, phrases and actions that will smooth your travel through the country and make a favorable impression on those you meet. We’re talking about things like how and where to remove your shoes, what to do in a restaurant, how to give or receive a gift, and how to travel on public transport.

Tokyo, Japan - March 2 2020: Japanese queuing and praying in the Yushima shrine of Tokyo dedicated to the god of studies, Sugawara no Michizane.

We’ve put together a simple, short and lighthearted lesson that we deliver in a 30-minute interactive Zoom lesson. It’s delivered by one of our veteran Kyoto guides who created the lesson based on years of watching foreign visitors to Japan interact with Japanese locals. The lesson can be extended to one hour for those who want to discuss some of the issues in greater depth or who want to ask more general questions about Japan.

The lesson costs ¥13,000 (about US$87) for the standard 30-minute session and ¥26,000 (about US$174) for the extended 60-minute session.

So, if you’re one of those travelers who really cares about respecting the people and cultures you come into contact with, this lesson is for you. It’s the perfect way to get psyched for your trip and even ask some more general questions about Japan. (Note that for actual trip planning, we recommend our trip planning and consulting services.)
